What is GO-SAFER?

GO-SAFER is a global home for trusted online-safety education: a directory of vetted programs and a library of plain-language resources for everyone who cares for children.

Behind the directory sits a careful review process. Child-protection researchers look at each program's content — is it accurate, age-appropriate and respectful of children? — and at its implementation: does it work in real classrooms, community halls and living rooms, not just on paper? Both scores are published openly, so you always know why a program is listed.

Around the directory we've built a library of short, friendly guides. They're written for busy parents, teachers and caregivers — no jargon, no fear-mongering — because keeping children safe online should feel doable, not daunting.

How did we get here?

GO-SAFER grew from a shared observation: great online-safety programs exist everywhere, but the people who need them can't find them — or can't tell which ones work. Researchers at the University of New Hampshire kept meeting brilliant local initiatives that no one outside their home country had heard of, while parents and teachers kept telling the WHO and ITU that they didn't know where to start.

So three institutions with very different strengths — child-protection research, public health, and global telecommunications — decided to build the missing bridge together. With funding from Safe Online, that idea became a review framework, then a pilot, and now the platform you're reading today.

  1. 2023

    The idea

    UNH, WHO and ITU begin mapping online-safety education worldwide — and discover hundreds of programs that families simply can't find.

  2. 2024

    The alliance

    Safe Online funds the partnership. Researchers, health experts and policy specialists design a fair, transparent review framework together.

  3. 2025

    The pilot

    The first twelve programs are reviewed end to end, and teachers and parents in eight countries help test the directory.

  4. 2026

    The launch

    GO-SAFER opens to the public in six languages, free for every family, school and community in the world.
